Background - After 7years in the Orchid hobby I've rapidly gone from a single Oncidium and Phalenopsis to over 600 plants in my ever-changing personal collection. For several years in the past, I managed a tropical fish wholesaler/hatchery and I continue to work full-time in the Web-Design / CD-ROM production business and teach as a part time college professor as well. But if I could, I'd probably give it all up to spend my life with the orchids! As of June 2002, SlipperOrchid.com is now a fully-inspected and licensed Illinois Nursery.

Breeding - I've already started an addictive breeding program and have tinkered with flasking (but admittedly I suck so I'll leave that to the pros!) Starting in 2002 you will see my first offerings of interesting and exceptional grexes from my breeding program. As of 2002, I've shifted and expanded my breeding focuses a bit:

Paphiopedilum Breeding

To create a Paphiopedilum hybrid which consists of 8 of the most sought-after Corypetalum species in equal portions - Paph. rothschilidanum, Paph. supardii, Paph. stonei, Paph. philippinense, Paph. praestans, Paph. sanderianum, Paph. adductum, and Paph. kolopakingii. The only expectations I have for the final result will be something really COOL with long, twisting petals!
Creating Paphiopedilums of reduced blooming size, working heavily with niveum and godefroyae (when possible). You will see MANY niveum crosses in the coming years, especially crosses of niveum X Vini / Maudiae style plants, which result in charming sm/med plants with elegant blooms similar in shape to Paph. Clover Charm (pictured on the homepage).
Working with more Brachy / Parvi production. These plants grow particularly well for me, and are of often reduced size. Plus, I have MANY requests for these types of plants. You will see both remakes of proven crosses (such as Mem. Larry Heuer and Mercedes Gallup) along with 2nd generation breeding. This breeding direction further combines both my interest in mini Paphs and experimental breeding as well (crosses such as Armeni-White X St. Swithin).
Species Production - I'm always interested in producing more species as they're truly the most valuable assets we have. I always prefer to "sib cross" which is crossing to unrelated plants of the same species or to siblings. I only do selfings (which is pollinating a plant with it's own pollinae - thus inbreeding) when I have a particularly nice species without a second quality specimen to mate with. My priority, above all other breeding, is the production of Paph. praestans (also known as Paph. glanduliferum var. praestans). This species is by far my favorite, surpassing even rothschildianum or sanderianum. It is by far the most striking plant I own and yet is very underrated in the commercial growing industry. Experimental Breeding - to a lesser extent, you will see me working with new primaries and crosses of variable outcome. The only way to innovate is to breed outside the norms.

Phragmipedium Breeding

Species Production - again, species are the most valuable asset we have, and in my opinion, some of the nicest Phrags around are the species. Of special interest to me including P. schlimii, tetzlaffianum, and fischeri.
Long Petalled Hybrids - This is my primary goal in hybridization; you will see many crosses attempted with Phrag. Paul Eugene Conroy as my stud plants mature and rebloom.

I have pollen stored from MANY of my stud plants (which can be viewed in the stud plant gallery), so if you're new to breeding or looking to add some diversity to your breeding projects, feel free to contact me! I am also interested in obtaining diverse pollen as well! I'm happy to swap excess pollen, trade for plants or any other arrangement!
